How to Improve Occupational Safety Assessments

Chemical manufacturers keep up their health and safety programs to ensure workers are safe from incidents, but they may not know their initiatives  are based on outdated information. When employers do not know about new regulations to control workplace hazards, there is a higher chance of injuries and incidents. Employers can better understand all of the risks of managing a chemical manufacturing facility by ramping up the number of safety assessments.

Companies often wait to conduct their safety assessments at the end of the year to allow employers to review past incidents and come up with safety measures to protect against recurrence. However, this approach does not help companies address urgent compliance or industrial hygiene requirements. To more effectively assess workplaces, employers should conduct evaluations more than once a year, according to an article published in the Journal of Business and Psychology.

Researchers suggest employers perform assessments at least once every three months."

How Often Employers Should Assess Workplaces
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported there were more than 4,600 fatalities and almost three million workers had serious injuries in 2011. Considering the high chance of injury or fatalities, employers should review their work place to determine whether they have a strong safety climate.

The Journal of Business and Psychology study defines safety climate as the perception of the policies, procedures and practices connected to occupational safety.

When employees believe their workplace is safe, they often increase productivity. However, the perception of safety could change based on how companies analyze their safety procedures and potential occupational risks. Researchers suggest there is an expiration date for safety climate assessments resulting from the risk of outdated information.

Since annual safety checks are not enough to prevent injuries effectively, researchers suggest that employers perform assessments at least once every three months.

"Our results show that for the most critical relationship – predicting more severe incidents by safety climate – organizations should deploy safety climate surveys at least quarterly if not monthly," reported the Journal of Business and Psychology. "Further, we have outlined numerous ways that a safety climate assessment can expire, because conditions in the organization have changed."

Tips to Improve Safety Assessments
A successful safety assessment should be focused on hazard prevention and control. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration provides a worksheet for safety assessments that looks for the following:

  • The presence of hazard controls. Employers should ensure engineering controls exist for specific hazards in the workplace, such as air purification solutions and gas detection systems to identify and control sources of potentially harmful gases and fumes.
  • A plan for maintaining facilities and equipment. In addition to controlling occupational risks, companies should also establish a maintenance schedule that is important for hazard prevention. Employers should regularly maintain equipment, engineering controls and safety tools to minimize risks.
  • Procedures and a team for emergencies. When there is an incident, employers should prepare the workforce for reacting to emergencies. To fully prepare for emergencies, workers should be trained in emergency response and understand their responsibilities in case accidents arise.

Total Safety Receives 18 Contractor Awards for Meritorious Safety Performance at AFPM in Austin

Total Safety received 18 Contractor Awards for Meritorious Safety Performance awards at the 2015 American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) National Safety Conference Awards Event Wednesday, May 16 in Austin, Texas for work performed in 2014. The member locations receiving the award range across the U.S. in more than five states. Total Safety has received 54 AFPM contractor merit awards in the past four years.

The AFPM Contractor Award for Meritorious Safety Performance recognizes maintenance contractors working a minimum of 20,000 hours per calendar year at a regular member facility which has achieved a total recordable incidence rate of 0.6 or less with no workplace related fatality during the calendar year.  The contractor’s application must be approved by a regular member facility after the OSHA 300A Summary log information has been submitted.

AFPM presented contractor merit awards to about 49 companies this year. Total Safety ranked in the top 10 for total number of merit awards received. The event marked a new record for Total Safety in regard to the number of awards received in a single year. Improvements in the company’s safety culture and safe work hours in 2014, more than double awards achieved in 2012.

“I’m very proud of our safety culture and the recognition from AFPM validates the hard work and dedication by all of our employees and as well as our strategy of leading by example,” said Total Safety Chief Executive Officer Troy Thacker. “Thank you to all of the regular member companies who have displayed their confidence in our performance.”

Total Safety Receives Gold Level Specialty Contractor HBR Award

Total Safety received the Houston Business Roundtable (HBR) gold award in the Technical Support Large category for the Lyondellbasell La Porte location. The HBR Safety Excellence Awards banquet took place on May 15 at the Moody Gardens Convention Center after an extensive six-month process.

The HBR award process involves hundreds of participants, starting with a nomination. Contractors must be nominated by their clients, making this award unique. There are no self-nominations.

Contractor work sites are nominated where the client holds verifiable safety performance data for the past calendar year. Nominated contractors are put into award categories based on the type of work they perform. Each nominee submits their OSHA required safety data regarding fatalities, lost workday cases, recordable injuries and illnesses, copies of their safety policies and procedures and documentation of their “best practices.”

After intensive evaluation and a successful field audit, Total Safety received the Gold level of recognition for Technical Support Large.

“These are very difficult to win. A client has to nominate you; HBR sends an audit team to your location. It’s a very thorough audit of processes, procedures, training documentation, and HBR auditors interviewed Total Safety employees that work at the LyondellBasell Bayport Facility” said Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Paul Tyree.

Since 1988, the Houston Business Roundtable has been recognizing Greater Houston Area Industrial Contractors for their outstanding safety performance.  This award process over the years has brought many of the Owner Companies in the Gulf Coast together with their Contractors in a cooperative effort to improve on-site safety, eliminate accidents, and most importantly, reduce injuries to employees.

If You Must Set-Off Fireworks This July Fourth, Take Precautions

With Fourth of July coming up, fireworks season is here.

Black cats, roman candles, sparklers, bottle rockets – you name it – someone will light the fuse.

It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated an estimated 11,400 people for fireworks-related injuries in 2013. Injury was highest for children, age 0-4, followed by children, 10-14.

“In 2007-2011, four people per year were killed in fires started by fireworks, while data from death certificates show that five people per year were killed directly by fireworks,” according to the NFPA website.

The list of risks associated with fireworks usage is not a short one.

To keep adults and children safe from injury or fatality, extreme safety precaution should be taken when using fireworks.

Remember the following as you and your family celebrate this Independence Day:

  • Avoid using them when possible. Go see a professional show.
  • Obey all local laws regarding the use of fireworks.
  • If you must use them, read all caution and warning labels. Carefully follow the directions.
  • Never let children use fireworks.
  • Use fireworks outdoors in a clear area away from buildings and vehicles.
  • As Total Safety always recommends, use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety goggles, hearing protection, and gloves.

The Valero Texas Open Benefit for Children Golf Classic, a project of the Valero Energy Foundation, has proudly delivered millions of dollars to children’s charities across the United States since Valero’s title sponsorship began in 2002.

Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, funds are distributed to children’s charities in the communities where Valero has major operations.
